Dan McMullen

Dan McMullen is a Partner with Calfee, Halter & Griswold, where he practices intellectual property law, leads the firm’s Information Technology Practice, and focuses on computer software and Internet application development and licensing, cloud hosting subscriptions, data rights, cybersecurity, blockchain, IoT and other IT-related transactions and dispute resolution. He taught intellectual property and cyberlaw classes for many years at Cleveland Marshall College of Law and later at Case Western Reserve University Law School, authors a treatise for LEXIS-NEXIS on electronic commerce, and serves on the U.S. District Court’s ADR Panel of Neutrals, mediating IP and IT disputes.

 

Mr. McMullen earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. Before becoming a lawyer, he designed management information systems for General Motors. Following graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk to the late Chief Judge Frank Battisti of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, worked as a Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. and subsequently joined the law firm of Jones Day. After

returning to Cleveland, Mr. McMullen served as court-appointed monitor and Special Master to the U.S. District Court in Reed v. Rhodes and mediated a comprehensive settlement agreement in that case before returning to private practice with Calfee.

 

Mr. McMullen currently serves on the boards of OHTec (formerly the Northeast Ohio Software Association) and the Ohio Conservation Federation, is a member of the North Coast Angel Fund and former director of a portfolio software company, Complion, and is past board chair of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission and former board member of the Technology and Integrated Media Environment program at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Institute for Educational Renewal at John Carroll. He also serves on the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s Government Affairs Council and is an alumnus of Leadership Cleveland.
